Days 184 - 189, Monday, December 5 through Friday, December 9

As I look back at this trip, it always amazes me how my mind’s eye selectively keeps intricately detailed pictures of the parks and monuments I visit, yet when I stay with a person in their house, the days pass seemingly all jumbled together. That’s how it was for the week of December 5 through December 9 while I was staying with Peter. Rather than trying to recall exactly what I did each day, I’ll just recount a few of the memorable events of the week.
One evening I took Karen for a motorcycle ride. She’d initially thought we might be able to get a hike in after the ride but when we pulled up to the place she had in mind as a hike, it was already dark. I was uncomfortable leaving my motorcycle and a couple thousand dollars of riding gear in a dimly lit parking lot, locked by a 1/8” diameter cable lock while she and I disappeared for who know how long we’d have been gone.
Peter took me to see the movie Aeon Flux and it was a definite let down. After seeing the movie, Peter and I saw a review on TV referring to it as Aeon Reflux. Very appropriate. The previews for it looked cool but the movie didn’t deliver.
Peter lives with his friend Dave Moschetti (sp?) whom Peter knows from his Navy days on the USS Chancellorsville. Talking with Dave one evening, I thought it was neat when he described to me how much he enjoyes living “with his best friend.” That’s pretty cool. Dave and Peter have known each other for more than 11 years and to be able to say that of such a long friendship is quite a statement.
Speaking of Dave, he took Peter and me to see Narnia one evening this week. Narnia is based on the series of books “The Chronicles of Narnia” which many people know as “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe” series. The movie was fantastic and Dave, who’s read the book recently, said the movie was very true to the book. I’ll look forward to the following movies in this series.
Friday night, Peter and I went out to a local bar and had a few drinks and played shuffle board. Sounds like a grey-hair activity but it’s actually a really good bar game. It was nice to just hang out with Peter for the evening. I really wish we could be lucky enough to live in the same city, but his current Navy Reserve job will hold him in San Diego for probably another 3 or 4 years while I’ll be living who-knows-where.
